Genoa

A tangled, vertical port city — historically wealthy, architecturally stunning, and underrated.

Why Genoa?

Genoa is one of Italy's great undersold cities — a maritime republic that for centuries rivalled Venice, with a UNESCO-listed old town of caruggi (narrow lanes) and palazzi rolling down from the hills to the harbour. It's surprisingly affordable, the food is exceptional (focaccia, pesto alla genovese, farinata), and the Cinque Terre and Portofino are 90 minutes away by regional train. Genoa's historic centre is one of the largest in Europe — but it's vertical and tangled; you'll get lost a lot at first.

Neighbourhoods to know

  • Centro Storico (Maddalena, Castelletto). The old town — caruggi, palazzi, cafés. Rent is cheap; some streets feel rough at night.
  • Foce / Albaro. East of centre, near the seafront — orderly, residential, more expensive.
  • Nervi. Coastal town within Genoa city limits — beautiful seaside park, calmer pace.
  • Castelletto. On the heights above the centre — funicular access, leafy, panoramic.

Coworking

  • Genova Smart City Lab. Tech-focused coworking near the port — international clientele.
  • CoWo Centro Storico. Coworking inside a renovated palazzo in the historic core.
  • Talent Garden Genova. Italy's biggest coworking network's Genoa location.

Things to do

  • Walk the Strada Nuova (Via Garibaldi) and visit Palazzo Rosso, Palazzo Bianco, and Palazzo Tursi — three palazzi with shared admission.
  • Eat focaccia for breakfast at a panificio — Genoa's national dish, typically dipped in milky cappuccino (yes, really).
  • Day-trip to Cinque Terre (90 min) or Portofino (45 min) — Liguria's coast is some of the prettiest in Italy.
  • Take the Castelletto lift up to Spianata Castelletto for the best view of the city.

Practical tip

Genoa rains a lot in winter — locals say the city has only two weather modes, sun and storm. Bring layers and a real raincoat. Summer is mostly dry and 25–30°C.
