Why Milan?
Milan is the least "Italian" Italian city in the cliché sense — there's a directness, a strong English-speaking core, and a tech and design industry that hires globally. Rent is the highest in Italy but transit is excellent (M1–M5 metro, frequent trams), Linate is 12 minutes from the centre, and the city sits 30 minutes from the lakes. Navigli, Brera, and Isola are the nomad-favoured neighbourhoods.
Neighbourhoods to know
- Navigli. The canal district — bars, art studios, the strongest aperitivo scene. Lively and a bit touristy, but the most fun on weekday evenings.
- Brera. Centro-style aesthetics — galleries, design showrooms, fashion. Beautiful and pricey.
- Isola. North of the centre near Porta Garibaldi — the city's tech and creative hub since the Bosco Verticale rebuild. Best for nomads working in tech.
- Porta Romana. Quieter, residential, well-connected by tram. Fewer tourists; same coffee.
Coworking
- Talent Garden Calabiana. The Milan flagship of Italy's biggest coworking network — large, professional, monthly desks from EUR 280.
- Copernico Centrale. Premium coworking in a converted railway building — international clientele, strong meeting rooms.
- WeWork Bastioni di Porta Nuova. Standard WeWork experience for those who want predictable amenities and global reciprocity.
Things to do
- Reserve Cenacolo Vinciano (The Last Supper) tickets weeks in advance — the room only takes 30 visitors at a time.
- Eat risotto alla milanese at a long-running osteria like Trattoria Masuelli — the saffron version is the city's signature dish.
- Spend a Saturday at the lakes — Como is 35 minutes by Trenord regional train; Lugano (Switzerland) is 70 minutes if you want to step over the border.
- Walk Brera at 7pm on a weekday — galleries open late and the streets are at their best in early evening.
Practical tip
Milan's August shutdown is real — many small shops, restaurants, and even pharmacies close from mid-August to early September. If you're moving, target a September arrival to find the city back at full speed.
