Why Trieste?

Trieste is Italy's most northeasterly city — wedged between the Slovenian border and the Adriatic, with a strong Habsburg architectural identity (it was the Austro-Hungarian Empire's seaport until 1918). Rent is moderate, the cafés are legendary (Caffè San Marco, Caffè degli Specchi), and the city has Italy's highest concentration of literary history per capita (Joyce, Svevo, Saba all worked here). Internet is excellent; the climate is breezy from the Bora wind. Slovenia is a 25-minute drive; Croatia 90 minutes.

Neighbourhoods to know

  • Centro / Cavana. Around Piazza Unità d'Italia — the city's grand square. Walkable, café-rich, slightly more expensive.
  • Borgo Teresiano. Habsburg-era grid pattern north of the centre — the city's most elegant residential streets.
  • San Vito. South of the centre, on the hill — residential, leafy, panoramic.
  • Barcola. Coastal, north-west of centre — long seaside promenade, summer favourite for swimming.

  • Innovation Factory Trieste. Tech-focused coworking with strong science-park ties — the city's hub for the international research community.
  • CoWo Trieste. Smaller cooperative coworking in the centre.
  • BASE Trieste. Cultural-creative space with coworking.

Things to do

  • Drink a caffè at Caffè San Marco (1914) — the wood-panelled Habsburg-era café where Joyce and Svevo wrote. Order "un nero" (espresso, in Triestino dialect).
  • Walk the Carso plateau above the city for the best views of the Adriatic and Slovenian border.
  • Visit Miramare Castle — Maximilian I of Mexico's seaside castle, a 15-minute bus ride from the centre.
  • Day-trip to the Slovenian Karst (Lipica horse stud, Postojna caves) — 45 minutes by car, half-day round-trip.

Practical tip

Trieste's Bora wind blows hard in winter — a katabatic wind from the north-east that can hit 100 km/h. The city installs ropes along main streets for pedestrians during severe Bora days.
