Why Bari?

Bari is southern Italy at its most pragmatic — a working port city with a beautifully restored old town (Bari Vecchia) and a modern grid-pattern Murat district built around shopping streets and cafés. It's the natural base for exploring Puglia: Polignano a Mare (35 min), Alberobello (60 min), Lecce (90 min), and the Adriatic beaches are all within an hour. Rent is half what you'd pay in Milan; the food is among Italy's best (orecchiette, focaccia barese, sea urchin); and Bari Karol Wojtyla airport (BRI) connects to most European capitals.

Neighbourhoods to know

  • Murat. The grid-pattern modern centre — pedestrian shopping streets, cafés, the strongest commercial heart. Most rentals here.
  • Bari Vecchia. The medieval old town — narrow lanes, women hand-rolling orecchiette in doorways, the city's most photogenic streets.
  • Madonella. Working-class, port-adjacent — cheap, real, with great fishmongers.
  • Pane e Pomodoro. South of the centre near a long beach — residential, summer-popular.

  • The Hub Bari. Bari's largest coworking — international community, strong meeting facilities.
  • CoWo Bari Murat. Central coworking, walkable to most apartments and cafés.
  • InnovaPuglia Coworking. Tech-focused space with strong startup ties.

Things to do

  • Eat focaccia barese standing at a bakery counter — Panificio Fiore on Strada Palazzo di Città is the canonical version.
  • Day-trip to Polignano a Mare (35 min) for the cliff-top town and the swimmable cove of Lama Monachile.
  • Walk through Bari Vecchia at golden hour and watch the women on Strada Arco Basso making orecchiette.
  • Explore the trulli of Alberobello (60 min by car) — UNESCO-listed conical-roofed stone houses unique to Puglia.

Practical tip

Bari summers are dry and intense (35°C+ in July–August) but the breeze off the Adriatic moderates everything. Winters are mild but rainy. The shoulder seasons (May, June, September, October) are perfect.
