Lecce

The "Florence of the South" — a baroque sandstone gem in the deep heel of Italy, surrounded by Salento beaches.

Why Lecce?

Lecce sits at the heart of Salento — the southernmost tip of Puglia. The city itself is a baroque masterpiece carved from soft golden Lecce stone, but the real draw is the surrounding coast: Otranto, Gallipoli, Santa Maria di Leuca, and a string of cliff-top white villages and turquoise coves. Internet has improved dramatically in the last 5 years; rent is among Italy's cheapest. Trade-off: getting elsewhere takes time — Lecce is 6 hours from Rome by train, 90 minutes from Bari.

Neighbourhoods to know

  • Centro Storico. Inside the city walls — pedestrian, baroque, with most of the cafés and coworking.
  • Castromediano / Mazzini. Just outside the centre — quieter, residential, walkable to the centro.
  • Borgo San Pio. South of the centre, near the train station — affordable, with an active local food scene.
  • Pine forest periphery (Frigole, Torre Chianca). Coastal hamlets 15 min outside Lecce — for nomads who want the beach within walking distance.

Coworking

  • Manifatture Knos. A converted industrial space — Lecce's biggest coworking, with strong community events.
  • CoWo Lecce. Central coworking near Piazza Sant'Oronzo — small but reliable.
  • Hub Lecce. Tech and design-focused space — newer, English-friendly.

Things to do

  • Walk Lecce's centro storico after dark when the baroque facades are lit — Piazza del Duomo is one of Italy's finest squares.
  • Beach-hop the Salento coast: Polignano a Mare's Lama Monachile, Punta Prosciutto's white sands, Otranto's old town and harbor.
  • Eat pasticciotto for breakfast — Lecce's signature pastry, a custard-filled tart eaten warm from the bakery.
  • Day-trip to Santa Maria di Leuca, the southernmost tip of Italy where the Adriatic meets the Ionian.

Practical tip

Salento gets very busy and very expensive in July and August — Italians from the north flood in. Aim for May, June, September, or October for the best balance of weather and quiet beaches.
